Shaggy

March 2010

I just wanted to shoot you a quick email to give you an update on Shaggy (The Great Pyreneese/ Irish Wolfhound cross) that we adopted.

When we first brought Shaggy home, he was so mellow and calm. I had a few days off of work, so I worked with him and got him more comfortable with our home. He started to blend in nicely! So I didn't think anything of leaving him when I had to return to my regular work shift- BOY was that a mistake! (Don't worry-it's a funny story now!) Well, my roommate's mother happens to live in the other half of the duplex next door to us, so she had been keeping an ear out for him. She said she didn't hear too much of a ruckus so she wasn't too concerned with it. When I came home for lunch, I realized the dog wasn't anywhere to be seen, and that the trash was tipped over. I assumed Karen had come over to get the dog because he was too anxious, so I went next door to get him from her. She told me she didn't have the dog...I was beside myself not knowing where he could have gone. I ran back in to the house to try to find him. Then I noticed the rest of the damage- we had a birthday cake on the counter which he licked the frosting off of (Just like a child! All frosting, no cake!!) He knocked the candy dish onto the floor- but didn't eat any of it. He did, however, eat half of our door frame. He also managed to unlock the livingroom window and escape! At the moment I saw the window, I relaized that I was dealing with a VERY smart boy! It wasn't even moments that I had been out looking for him when I got a call from our local shelter that he had been picked up. Apparently, the neighbor had something in his yard that smelld good and Shaggy was sniffing around there....thank GOODNESS for microchipping! Needless to say, we got him back that day (And got his city tags while we were there!) and arranged for a dog sitter until we could track down a kennel large enough to house him.

He loves his new home now that he is fully adjusted, and no longer tries to escape! My best friend has a small terrier and a pom that she brings over once in a while that Shaggy loves to play with. We also have a sugar glider that he loves to taunt. He will lay right up next to the glider's cage and Gizmo will groom away. He isn't too fond of baths, but is getting better with them. He loves to go on car rides and stick his head out the sunroof! If only you could see the looks we get driving down the road with him! We go for walks on a regular basis and now that the dog park is open again, he LOVES going there and meeting all sorts of puppy play pals. Fetch is his favorite game, and he plays tug of war sort of...he is so gentle that when you start pulling back he drops the toy and will place his paws on it, but won't put it in his mouth. If you are sitting on the floor, he will come give you hugs- that is- he will come up in front of you and stick his head on your shoulder. It is very sweet! He loves getting brushed daily. When he wants your attention, he will go get something he knows he isn't supposed to have (For example, the bag of beggin strips) and bring it to you. He won't chew it or destroy it, just mess around with it long enough that you have to pay attention to him. Every day his personality grows and grows. He is quite the lovable character and we are so glad and so proud to have him as part of our family!

Thank you!!
